WHAT IS
POLYVAGAL THEORY?

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Stephen Porges, is a psychological framework that explores how the autonomic nervous system influences emotional regulation and social behavior. The theory emphasizes the role of the vagus nerve, which is a key component of the parasympathetic nervous system, in regulating our response to stress and safety. According to Polyvagal Theory, the vagus nerve has three distinct pathways that affect how we react to perceived threats or safety: the ventral vagal complex, which supports social engagement and calm states; the sympathetic nervous system, which triggers the fight-or-flight response; and the dorsal vagal complex, which can induce a freeze or shutdown response. Understanding these mechanisms helps explain how physiological states impact our emotional and social interactions, offering insights into trauma, stress, and overall mental health.

DAILY IFS MEDITATION

Many of our protector parts took on their roles when we were very young. Their actions help us cope in powerful and critical ways. However, many clients report getting to a certain place in their lives, when they are safer, have more space for reflection and that it seems time to look inside to look after the past.

"The Good Fairy" is a story that depicts all that our parts do to protect us and the start of the journey of getting to know them. Read "The Good Fairy" here.

Some clients who connect with the IFS philosophy choose to engage in regular check ins or meditations with their parts.

If you are interested, there are several IFS meditations available on the free "Insight Timer" app.
