WHAT IS TRAUMA?

"Trauma is the lasting emotional response that often results from living through a distressing event. Experiencing a traumatic event can harm a person's sense of safety, sense of self, and ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships. Long after the traumatic event occurs, people with trauma can often feel shame, helplessness, powerlessness and intense fear." (https://www.camh.ca)

"Big T" traumatic events are overt, extreme, and fit the common conception of a trauma e.g.:

*Physical or sexual abuse or neglect

*Exposure to war or natural disasters

*Witnessing death or harm

"Little T" traumatic events may include any event or ongoing situation that causes distress, fear, and a sense of helplessness e.g.:

*Unmet childhood needs

*Relationship break up

*Loss of a job

*Financial worries

HEALING FROM TRAUMA

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy, EMDR, Brainspotting, and somatic therapies each offer unique and complimentary pathways to recovery. IFS Therapy helps individuals address internal conflicts by connecting with and healing different "parts" of themselves, including their inner child, which is crucial for fostering integration and self-compassion. EMDR facilitates processing distressing memories, while Brainspotting focuses on trauma through specific eye positions, aiding in deep, focused healing. Somatic therapies emphasize the mind-body connection, helping to release stored tension and enhance emotional regulation. Central to these approaches is the development of a secure attachment with the self, which involves building a nurturing and compassionate inner dialogue. By reconnecting with the inner child and establishing a supportive relationship with oneself, individuals can create a stable foundation for healing, allowing for profound personal growth and resilience.
