SSP & RRP
MUSIC PROTOCOLS

The Unyte music protocols are therapeutic listening programs designed to support nervous system regulation, emotional wellbeing, attention, and resilience through specially filtered music. The protocols are based on the understanding that the nervous system and auditory system are closely connected, and that carefully modified sound can help the brain and body move toward greater regulation and safety.

The programs were developed by Stephen Porges in collaboration with Unyte Health and other clinicians and researchers working in the fields of neuroscience, trauma, sensory processing, and autonomic nervous system regulation. The protocols are informed by Polyvagal Theory, which explores how the nervous system responds to safety, connection, stress, and threat.

The music used in the protocols is not ordinary music. It is acoustically modified and filtered to gently exercise and support the neural pathways involved in listening, social engagement, emotional regulation, and physiological calm. The music is listened to through headphones in a structured way, either independently at home or alongside therapy.

Many people use the protocols to support:

  • nervous system regulation

  • trauma recovery

  • anxiety and stress

  • sensory overwhelm

  • emotional regulation

  • attention and focus

  • sleep and recovery

  • social engagement and connection

The protocols are designed to be gentle and supportive, helping the nervous system gradually build flexibility and resilience over time. They are often used alongside psychological therapy to enhance feelings of safety, regulation, and capacity for connection.

There are two protocols available - the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) and the Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP)

WHAT IS THE SAFE & SOUND PROTOCOL?

Using specially filtered music, the Safe & Sound Protocol (SSP) is designed to support nervous system regulation by helping the brain and body experience greater feelings of safety and connection. Many people find it helpful for reducing stress and overwhelm, improving emotional regulation, increasing social engagement, and supporting recovery from trauma, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, and chronic stress. The program is delivered gradually and gently, often alongside therapy, to help build resilience and regulation over time.

WHAT IS THE REST
& RESTORE PROTOCOL?

The Rest and Restore Protocol (RRP) is a therapeutic music listening program designed to support relaxation, recovery, and nervous system regulation. Using specially filtered music, the RRP helps calm the body’s stress response and encourages states of rest, safety, and restoration. Many people use it to support sleep, reduce stress and overwhelm, improve regulation, and create a greater sense of calm and balance in daily life.
